CE Marking My Soft Toys

For quite some time I’ve wanted to make creatures from my stash of vintage materials.  However it turns out that there is a European Directive that says anything that has play value or visual appeal to a child must comply with lots of regulations. Vintage materials are a bit of a grey area, as the manufacturers can't always be traced for fabric safety testing and safety levels have changed over the years (particularly in relation to the metallic elements in fabric).  You can read all about the rules here if you are in the mood. So to cut a long story short, I have now made a creature in a ‘vintage style’ just because I hate to be beaten!

I have met every one of the regulations, and now have an inch thick ream of paper to prove that this one single toy is safe for a child to play with. Bunny is made from denim and cotton fabric, meant to look like she’s made from scraps, but it’s all new materials and triple stitched no less.  Everything used in her production has a safety certificate (the fabrics, thread, stuffing, interfacing, even the compulsory label) and she underwent the physical tests shown below...twice (pre-washed and washed).

It’s a shame that she didn’t get to live for very long…

The Tests

If you are thinking of going down this road and you are in the UK then you should check out the CE Marking Handmade Toys Collective (sorry I can't put in a link here as it seems to go straight to my login page).   They can provide you with everything you need....at a cost of course!  I found them to be very helpful.  I'd better get cracking, I have a lot of bunnies to make...xx

Is it Summer Yet?

wildflowers

When is summer going to get here?  I managed to salvage a few wildflowers from the garden, the rain is making all the petals wilt too soon.

Busy Bee

I've been a busy bee too, finally getting around to getting my CE toy certification sorted out...

Will show you soon what happened to this poor bunny...xx

Wedding Season!

Vintage 1930s Wedding Postcards

It's Wedding Season at FionasGotVintage!  I've just added a few gorgeous vintage wedding postcards from the 1930s.  Crowns must have been popular in those days because most of the brides are sporting some fancy headgear.  I'm very tempted to keep the lovely couple top left...they look so kind.  I don't know about you but I'm always more drawn to wedding photos of ordinary everyday couples rather than the glamorous high fashion photo shoots...

I love this one of the bride standing in front of the allotment.  Did Father of the Bride want to show of his daughter or his sprouting veg?!!

Spring

Despite the hail and snow this week, spring seems to be progressing.  I found this beautiful little pale blue hatched egg on the path this morning.  I think it may be from a starling...

I also managed to squeeze in a wee bit of beach combing...

Lovemyartjewelry - bloghop

Today I'm joining in with lovemyartjewelry who are hosting a blog hop in tribute to David Bowie. I'm enjoying exploring making vessels in metal clay at the moment, so I came up with an idea to make a 'keeper of secrets' talisman type thing...a nod to Bowie being a very private person behind the scenes.  At home, I have a tiny little puppet in one of my vintage display cabinets that I took the idea from to form my vessel.  If you pull the string from either end the hat goes on or off....

Here she is...2 inches tall!

...so for the talisman, the thread keeps the lid on and it can be pulled up to put something inside.

Talisman in green ware stage

For such a small object, it still took a couple of days to construct and then an epic 9 hours in the kiln so I'm happy that it actually survived the long firing. I loved the colours when I retrieved it from the carbon and was tempted to keep it like that ...

Beautiful patina when just dug out of the carbon

...but in the end I polished it up and gave it a heat patina.  There are some improvements and adaptations that can be made for the next one - soldering on a loop underneath to hang some dangles from for example, but I'm happy with my first attempt and relieved that I had something to contribute today...

Bronze Clay 'Secret Keeper'

Bronze Clay 'Secret Keeper' - open

***Lloyd - no one could have been a bigger fan of Bowie than you, so thank you for taking me to see him perform live at Murrayfield in Edinburgh back in 1983.  I remember people looking at you and nudging their pals because you looked so much like him.  You were only a little bit vain about it!! I bet you're over the moon that you have such good company up there with you now...xx***

I hope you enjoyed your visit, come back soon and to get back to lovemyartjewelry click here...

Vintage Tins

Old Rusty Tin with Vintage Contents

Another Old Rusty Tin With Vintage Contents

I've been having some fun filling up these old tins with vintage goodies, a perfect activity for a cold stormy day.  Reminds me of when I was a child and I would spend hours rummaging through my mum's button tin.  Ideal for mixed media or altered art projects, they are in the shop now and you can click here if you are interested in seeing the full contents...xx
